KungaTenphel, was born in 1630 in the Chamdo region of Kham, Tibet. Recognized at a young age as the 2ndKhamtrul Rinpoche by Yongzin Kunga Lhundrup, he was enthroned by the chief disciple of the previous Khamtrul Rinpoche at Tsogyal Retreat Center in Darkyab, Kham. KungaTenphel received the complete teachings of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage from Yongzin Kunga Lhundrup of Dechen Choekhor Monastery. He also received teachings from Choegon Rinpoche Chokyi Gyamtso. In addition to reciting billions of Tara mntras, KungaTenphel made numerous long retreats to practice the teachings he had received. He passed away at the age of 49 in 1678.
